Season 2 | Episode 4: November 30-December 6 2020

Dear friends, colleagues, guests, dear public,

On last Wednesday we learned about the prolongation of the current lockdown “light” until the end of December. This “lightness” means no live art, no audience, no getting together in the same room.

Our 4th episode of Flutgraben Performances 2020 is scheduled for next week (Nov 30th until Dec 6th) and it is affected by this ongoing “no” to any live audience.

We decided not to cancel this episode. We want to do something, we want to continue making art. But we do not want to simply jump online, stream what is meant for physical encounter, put on zoom what is not made for screen. With this “no” to live audience we are left with the question of how to address you, how to involve you, where and how to find you, and whether to aim for a remote “you” at all. We cannot pretend that it is clear to us how to go public now and we don’t want to fake a relation that we do not feel, sense, believe in.
It takes time to get there where you are right now or to make up new places where we can meet.

We are 12 artists, and naturally, we are having different perspectives, emotions, thoughts on what is going on right now and how to handle the situation.

What we will do in this episode #4 is to meet every day in two groups and work on possible encounters between us. Some of us will experiment with remote liveness and stream, others will film, write, draw, move and dance, we will work with images, scripts, tasks, guided settings etc. In doing so we try to figure out how and why (not) to address each other and you under the current circumstances. There will be windows to join in, an open session on Sunday afternoon and some of us might work on things that take longer than this week and will come to you later.

It is open what will happen on our search. We will keep you updated from our time with/out you and hope to see, hear, feel you soon!

Yours,

Asaf Aharonson, Christina Ciupke, Stella Geppert, Jared Gradinger, Ixchel Mendoza Hernandez, Milla Koistinen, Clément Layes, Moritz Majce, Sandra Man, Sergiu Matis, Jefta van Dinther, Jasna Layes Vinovrski

Season 2 | Episode 2: June 06–14 2020

In the heart of the second episode of Flutgraben Performances 2020 there were ten encounters for single visitors. Each of the participating artists developed a trajectory into his*her artistic universe and shared it with an audience member. The meetings took place on various locations indoor and outdoor: visitors were taken on different kinds of walks by Christina Ciupke, Milla Koistinen, Sergiu Matis; they went on a boat trip by Clément Layes, and on a cab ride by Moritz Majce; they sat in environments – under an oak tree, invited by Jared Gradinger and in an installation by Sandra Man on a balcony that used to be the German-German border; they spent time in a kitchen talking with Asaf Aharonson and in studios with Stella Geppert and Jasna L. Vinovrški. Jefta van Dinther and Ixchel Mendoza gave insights into their future works.

In the main hall of Flutgraben there was an exhibition of drawings created by the Flutgraben artists group under the guidance of Stella Geppert, together with the presentation of an object inspired by Wilhelm Reich´s Orgon Accumulator and built by the group members under the direction of Moritz Majce, as well as a documentation of the ongoing talk series “What Makes an Artist?” by the group, initiated by Sandra Man. After a group dance choreographed by Milla Koistinen, there was the dinner performance by Asaf Aharonson for all guests.

Season 2 | Episode 1: May 11–17 2020

The very first episode of the new season of Flutgraben Performances fell right into the lockdown caused by the outbreak of the Corona Virus. The twelve artists representing the group for 2020 could not meet and were spread and separated in various parts of Europe, each of them experiencing the crisis and the shutdown differently. Instead of cancelling or postponing the group decided to use the time planned. They met remotely and explored encounters over distance artistically and in manyfold ways. Deprived of any live audience the group took itself as the public, each artist finding a way of giving an insight into his*her artistic universe as well as an approach of making it accessible later on in future post lockdown times.

The encounters happened in various forms and media. The artists sent and received recorded audio files with tasks and responded to them by writing texts; they met on online platforms transforming them into a stage for appearing and disappearing; they sent texts to each other, turning the act of reading into a performance. They met in video chats and performed tasks together. They wrote letters to each other. The whole first episode was dedicated to the intense exploration of distance and the transformation of the technical tools given into sensual and spiritual means of connection.
